We were among the first!

I attended a play this past weekend. A play titled Te Veel Vir ‘n Coloured Girl (Too Much For A Coloured Girl). I sat there for an hour and I was enthralled. I was captivated. I could not take my eyes off the four women on stage. Four women sharing their art and their voices with us.

The four women on stage, namely Tereska Muishond (who is also the Playwright), Tyla Jade Muishond, Justinovia Kettledas and Leonie Christians, portrayed the struggles of being a Coloured Woman. They showed us the daily battles that are fought by our women (and men). They showed us the joys of being a Coloured woman. The strength that we possess that we so often underestimate.

I was reminded yesterday that although we are often seen as a misunderstood race, in our own way, we understand each other, and that’s all that matters. We are often seen a race with no culture, but we are so colourful and rich in culture, that it cannot be easily understood. They have tried to categorize us, but we cannot be put into categories. We are a people like no other. We suffer, we rejoice, we fail, we prosper. We laugh, we cry, we win and we lose. We give, we take, we learn and we teach. We rise and we fall. Our children too become nurses and doctors, lawyers and judges, architects and engineers, psychologists and professors. Our children also travel abroad and are seen on television. Our children also have talent and showcase it. We are not all drunks and addicts. We are not all bullies and fighters. We are not losers. We are the Coloured people of South Africa, a people with a rich and colourful history. We were among the first people. And we shall be among the last.  The men of men.

I am thankful that I was reminded of this. There is often so much negativity, that we look past the positives. But today, I hope to remind you that we should be proud of who we are. Dark skinned, light skinned, coarse hair, straight hair, curly hair, big hips, small waists, brown or green eyes, whatever you look like, stand proud! Coloured man and woman, stand tall! Our Souls can never be crushed.

Today, be proud of who you are. There is none like you.

Take Care
